A school bus-related crash is defined by NHTSA as any crash in which a vehicle, regardless of body design, used as a school bus is directly or indirectly involved. Also, this includes incidents involving schoolchildren getting in or out of a car.
From 2009 to 2018, about 70% of the deaths in school bus-related crashes were occupants of vehicles other than the school bus, and 17% were pedestrians. Moreover, about 5% were school bus passengers, 4% were school bus drivers, and 2% were pedal cyclists.
Of the people injured in school bus-related crashes from 2008 to 2018, about 36% were school bus passengers, 8% were school bus drivers, and 51% were occupants of other vehicles. Subsequently, the rest were pedestrians, pedal cyclists, and others or unknown.
Characteristics of school bus transportation
According to the Schoolbus Fleet, an estimated 471,461 yellow school buses supply transportation services daily in the United States. Besides, about 25 million primary and middle school children ride school buses to and from school every day.
Subsequently, this compares to projections from the U.S. Department of Education of K-12 enrollments in Fall 2018 of about 57.2 million public school students and 6.7 million private school students.
Finally, school buses are the best choice for transporting kids to school, safer than both walking or riding in a car. In addition, NSC supports the adoption of lap restraints and shoulder belts to make them even safer.
