[Costa Mesa, CA] – Sergio Marroquian Killed in Street Take-Over Crash on Hayland Avenue

Sergio Marroquian Dies in Costa Mesa Takeover Crash

October 22, 2020 – Sergio Marroquian, age 23, was killed on Thursday morning. This was the result of a takeover crash on Sunflower Avenue and Hyland Avenue.

Sadly, the incident occurred around 2:30 A.M. wherein the vehicle flipped on its side. About 100 vehicles appeared to have started taking over the crossing.

Consequently, Mr. Marroquian family members mentioned that the deceased’s cousin was the driver of the vehicle.

The driver remained behind at the scene and cooperated with authorities in the investigation. During the investigation, he was administered a sobriety test that turned out negative for drugs or alcohol. However, he was arrested a brief time later a homicide charge.

A brief time later, four other individuals were also taken into custody.

Costa Mesa police Sgt. Zack Hoferitza was quoted as saying “Our investigators and our police department will aggressively seek out anybody that participated in this and we will seek prosecution for this.” He also added, “A young man lost his life because of it. It looks like fun, but it is not fun.”

Street takeovers began plaguing the Costa Mesa area over the past month according to police. Moreover, participants were throwing rocks and bottles at officers. Not only that, authorities also said that participants will also kick patrol vehicles as they go by.

“They have formulated plans where they throw rocks at our officers, they do whatever they can do. They stand in front of us, because they know we won’t run them over so that they let the cars that are street racing get away,” Hoferitza said.

It is time to stand up against this dangerous, irresponsible culture

Everyone can agree that the noticeable rise in crime, which is the theme of 2020, is more than tiresome. From climbing car theft rates to senseless violence, everyone seems on edge these days.

If things were not bad enough, there is a rising trend of street takeovers by criminals who want to do burnouts, drift, etc. Subsequently, injuring innocent bystanders.

People absolutely love cars, and they love having fun behind the wheel even more. Not to mention, we drive on the same public roads with our children and other loved ones.

Both reasons are staunch reminders as to why people must take a stand against the growing trend of street takeovers in different cities across the United States. Unfortunately, this is not a new problem for us. Likewise, it is a problem that has been around for a long time, but enough is enough.

Real supporters do not take part in street takeovers and they are tired of the way media outlets, politicians, and others portray it as a problem attached to the hobby.  Also, true car lovers have a healthy understanding and respect for the potentially destructive nature of their vehicles.

Consequently, a major epicenter for this street takeover trend has been Atlanta. Not to mention, the scene in the metropolitan area has become notorious, with attendees creating a carnival-like atmosphere complete with fireworks and music.

Police blame empty streets from shutdowns as well as social media for the increase. However, a disregard for safety and a sense of entitlement are the real problems.

Disagree that these people organizing and taking part in street takeovers are selfish and entitled?

Last month, a group took over the street in front of the Space Needle in Seattle last month. As a result, police took over an hour to respond as it happened during roving riots in the city.

After they finally arrived, officers had to make their way through a sea of parked cars in the road. Alas, this gave the drivers who were doing smoke donuts enough time to escape.

Motorcycle Group Taunt Houston Police As They Evade Arrest

Another city which has more than its share of street takeover problems is Houston. Moreover, while it was not a complete takeover situation, the police responded to motorcyclists performing tricks on a highway and even attacking one car.

Several riders taunted police and refused to pull over. As a result, a recent Facebook post made by the Houston Police Officers’ Union blamed the problem on criminals no longer fearing “prosecution or repercussions for their actions.”

Not all communities are putting up with street takeovers. Furthermore, a recent report displayed how Phoenix Az. police are cracking down on street takeovers.

Officials say it is not only the street takeovers involve dangerous driving that they are looking for. Sadly, these events are a magnet for drug use, impaired driving, as well as violence.

Hopefully, other cities find ways to combat this rising trend, because the criminals involved are becoming more brazen which makes them more dangerous.

Responsible car lovers usually give back to the community where they live in one way or another. For example, there are countless car clubs, groups of friends raising money for charity, parades for a child’s birthday parties, among other things that help make where they live a better place.

To the family and friends of Sergio Marroquian, we cannot begin to imagine what you are going through, and our sincerest condolences go out to you.
